A definitive list of cool, automotive related things to do and see around the country.

Kinja'd!!!

Things like Carhenge...

I can’t quite yet divulge why I need this information, but trust me when I say, its good. Please leave tracks and off-road only accessible areas off the list. And be sure to include the city and state where these sites are located.

Places can (and should) include sites, museums, ongoing events, or anything that is repeatedly visitable by the general public either free or for a fee.

Thank you,

Management [not management]

I’m going to break your rule and say Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Awesome museum, and you can take a tour of the track and facilities.

Every October, the small town of Newport, Indiana is inundated with a flood of amazing old cars. Want to see pre-war hotrods driving in anger? Don’t have the money to make it to Goodwood? Then get your ass to Newport!

Newport’s main road runs out of the city square and straight up a substantial hill. Back in the day, several car-makers used it for performance testing. That wound up leading to a tradition of thrashing old steel up the historic incline.

Kinja'd!!!

Cars made before 1959 aren’t even allowed to enter. We’re talking seriously old stuff here. Pre-war. Really pre-war; the motorcycles especially. You’ll see a 1908 Harley. You’ll see a 1912 Abingdon. You’ll see unbelievably rare cars and bikes, which should be museum pieces, tearing ass up the hill! These guys go for it, pedal-to-the-medal, absolutely flat-out in priceless artifacts. It isn’t a particularly long or challenging course, but just seeing these things run is such a treat.

For that one weekend the whole town is drenched in automobilia. There’s a car show for all the post-’59 steel that’s too new to enter the race, but still incredibly cool. There’s great food and drink everywhere, everyone is friendly, the weather is great that time of year, and the only money you have to spend is a couple bucks for parking! Free admission to the general public; always has been, always will be.

It is a wonderful event, totally under-appreciated. Any Jalop within driving distance absolutely needs to attend at least once.

Forest Service roads are technically roads, so they count to be included. They are generally maintained gravel roads, so regular cars can drive on them.

Location: A state / national forest near you.

How to find: Go to Google maps. Zoom out until you see a large green splotch marked as a state / national forest. Drive there and wander around.

Barber Motorsports Park. A museum with a track right in front of it.

The Henry in Dearborn Michigan.

It has cars, but it also has a lot of stuff about the history of industrialization in the U.S. The tour of the F150 factory is part of The Henry as well. The F150 plant is part of the historic River Rouge complex and they gave a tower that you can look out over it from. The scale of of that facility is amazing.

Ok what you want to do is get on I-90 around Chicago, then you can visit the Illinois Railway Museum, the Studebaker Museum, The RV Museum, then jump down I-69 for the Auburn Cord Duesenberg museum and Auburn Truck Museum then head north to Lansing, for the Oldsmobile museum, head east to Henry Ford or west to The Gilmore Museum.

If you want to jog a little further off I-90 for a little you can hit up the Volo Auto Museum as well, not too far from the Railway Museum outside of Chicago.

Last time I was there, they fired up that Drag-Spec Harley that's in the basement. It was a glorious sound. Also, elevator-mounted F1 car.

Dick’s Classic Garage in San Marcos, Texas. Tons of vintage (mostly American) iron from the first 60 years of the 20th century, including a Tucker Torpedo.

Well, as Barber Motorsports Park has already been mentioned, let’s stay in my home state of Alabama. I’ve never been, but: Stephens Performance . They’re a junkyard with just old Mopars. 700 of them. I think all of the PowerBlock TV shows have been there at some point or another. On a side note, does PowerBlock TV exist anymore?

Any pick n pull type junk yard.

Kinja'd!!!

Also I know you said no race tracks, but any NHRA Nationals event should be attended by every car guy. Even if you aren’t into drag racing it is something you need to see, hear, and feel.

I'm not sure where the museum is but the Blue Ridge Parkway is a must. It's in Western NC. From there you could find some amazing Appalachian back roads.

Museum: Nashville, TN

The other: Just explore southwestern North Carolina, it’s one of the prettiest and most peaceful places on earth. And the roads are amazing.
